Rudolf Nordström: The Calm Before the Storm
23 aug 202414 sep 2024

Rudolf Nordström. In the Footsteps of a Master, 2024, Oil on canvas, 61 cm x 83 cm.

The exhibition will feature eight new plein air paintings that explore the intersection of natural landscapes and the complexities of the human psyche.

In the exhibition, Nordström continues his conversation with art history, engaging with the work of masters such as Carl-Frederik Hill and Claude Monet. His approach, however, is distinctly contemporary, blending the spontaneity of plein air painting with thoughtful reflections on mental health and emotional challenges. “The Calm Before the Storm” emphasizes Nordström’s dedication to plein air painting, capturing the raw, unfiltered beauty of landscapes across Denmark, Spain, France, and Germany. Each piece reflects a moment in time, deeply connected to the artist’s immediate interaction with nature.

The work “In The Footsteps of a Master” (Low Tide at Varengeville-sur-Mer, France, November 2nd, 2022) was painted on the very site where Monet created his famous work. This piece encapsulates Nordström’s method: not merely replicating the past but reinterpreting it through his unique lens. The steep cliffs and dangerous tides of the Atlantic coast are more than just a backdrop—they echo the tension between serenity and chaos, a recurring theme in Nordström’s work. Nordström’s paintings balances between calmness and turmoil, drawing parallels between the natural world and the human mind.
