OPSTALT (FACADE) exhibits fronts and facades through the eyes of two artists. Rishøj has a panoramic view while Torpe offers a close up. The name ‘opstalt’ (uk: ‘elevation’) originates from the architectural term for drawings incorporating multiple points of view in a single frame.
Both artists’ works center around formal and spatial investigations of colours and layers. The immediate figuration is constantly challenged by abstract notions.
The encounter between Rishøj and Torpe becomes an exhibition of energy and emotion.
Mette Rishøj’s works are visual collisions and a meeting of both expression and controlled, formal style.
In OPSTALT (FACADE), Rishøj’s pictures are of various buildings from Copenhagen and she investigates city icons and developments and how they affect us. The acrylics show the human experience of the city in a playful, joyous and hopefully surprising manner. As always, something is happening when Rishøj applies paint to the canvas.
Mette Rishøj (b. 1972) has had countless solo shows in and out of Denmark, including Randers and Fanø Kunstmuseum. Member of BKF and KKS.
Anne Torpe’s interest is the painterly method itself. In OPSTALT (FACADE), she shows a series of various jars, plants and jugs. Thin layers of oil paint constitute the base of the paintings, showing both the actual and the negative space of shapes and forms. The result is new views and figurations. Between the layers of paint, discarded and distorted figurations and shapes becomes an integral part of the works.
Anne Torpe (b. 1981) graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Arts and The Munich Academy in 2009. Runs the exhibition space RØM in cooperation with 4 other visual artists.
